What is art? (definition)

For some, when searching for “buy art paintings” the question arises, what is art anyway. Like so many things, this is a question of definition. The writer José Martí from Cuba had the following definition for art:

“Art is nothing other than nature created by man.” (translation in English) | “El arte no es más que la naturaleza creada por el hombre.” (original in Spanish)

The eminent philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said about art, among other things:

“In this sense, of course, painting and sculpture are only means of art: the real art is the ability to create images, whether this is pre-creating or post-creating. On this quality – a generally human one – rests the cultural significance of art.”
(The Dionysian Worldview, § 2)

“The value of art is that we here once let the inverted world be straight, untrue true, for recreation (the untrue as true, the unfounded as founded, etc.)”
(From the state, Summer 1880)

Of course, many other important thinkers have grappled with the definition of art, such as the mathematician George Spencer-Brown:

“In short, a well-constructed work of art will pick you up, transport you, show the secrets of your being, return you, and plant you back on your feet again wondering what hit you.” [1]

The legal remarks on art are also interesting, as the German Federal Constitutional Court has defined no less than three different concepts of art in the course of its judicial history:

Of course, many more important thinkers have addressed the definition of art. The legal explanations of art are also interesting, as the German Federal Constitutional Court has defined no less than three different concepts of art in the course of its judicial history:

  • Material concept of art (definition): “The essence of artistic activity is the free creative design in which impressions, experiences, experiences of the artist through the medium of a specific formal language are brought to a immediate perception. All artistic activity is a combination of conscious and unconscious processes that cannot be resolved rationally. In artistic creation, intuition, imagination and artistic understanding work together;it is primarily not communication, but expression, and indeed the most direct expression of the individual personality of the artist.” (BVerfGE 30, 173, 188f.)
  •
  • Formal concept of art (definition): “If one sees the essence of a work of art in the fact that, when viewed formally, typologically, the genre requirements of a certain type of work are fulfilled, one thus takes as a basis a rather formal concept of art, which is linked only to the activity and the results of, for example, painting, sculpting, writing poetry, […]” (BVerfGE 67, 213, 226f.)
  •
  • Open concept of art (definition: “Even if one sees the characteristic hallmark of an artistic expression in the fact that, because of the diversity of its message content, it is possible to extract ever more far-reaching meanings from the representation by way of a continuing interpretation, so that a practically inexhaustible, multi-level conveyance of information results […]” (BVerfGE 67, 213, 227)

Sometimes art is also differentiated according to its origin, for example European art, African art (including Egyptian and Moroccan art pictures), Asian art (including Chinese art paintings, Indian art paintings or those from Thailand), Celtic art paintings or American art (for example Cuban art paintings). Another distinguishing criterion is age, when differentiating between ancient (e.g. medieval), modern and contemporary art. And one differentiates according to whether it is expensive art pictures or cheap art pictures. Art pictures are also differentiated by motifs, such as art pictures with sunset, angel art pictures, architecture art pictures, people abstract, geometric shapes or animals such as lion pictures. Also according to the place where the pictures should hang, a distinction is made, such as art pictures for the office.

Difference kitsch and art

Unlike art, kitsch usually cannot be interpreted, whereas a work of art allows for or even demands a margin of interpretation. Moreover, kitsch often serves stereotypes, i.e. things that are already known, whereas a work of art is expected to be unique, i.e. to have originality. Another definition of kitsch, which is older, is: wrong in place, time and material.

Basically, one can say that kitsch is something that causes excessive mawkishness and/or is chummily. Cute objects are also often described as kitsch.

There is uncertainty about the origin of the term kitsch. Kitsch could come from the dialect term “kitschen”, which means to sweep up street dirt (klitschen). The term kitsch could also come from the English word “sketch” to describe fleeting paintings. It is also possible that it comes from the Yiddish word “verkitschen”, which means “to put something useless on someone”. Furthermore, an origin from the Hindustani term for potter’s clay is assumed and a proximity to kitschy artefacts from the Indus Valley is established.

Difference art and design

One possible distinction between art and design is that art serves an end in itself, while a design piece is made for a specific purpose, such as a designer chair to sit on. In addition, works of art are usually unique, while designer pieces are produced in larger quantities up to mass production.

And also in the case of the difference between art and design, one can once again make use of the room for interpretation that is given in the case of works of art, while design pieces are primarily intended to appeal to the market in order to achieve a high appreciation there in the form of higher prices in contrast to non-designer goods.

Difference art and handicraft

One possible distinction between art and craft is that the artist creates unique pieces, while the craftsman often produces series, sometimes only small series. Another possible distinction between art and craft is that art comes from the heart, while craft originates in the head. Art is also more often a creative process, while handicrafts are usually based on learned skills. And it can generally be said that art has an aesthetic purpose, while crafts often have functional purposes and/or decorative purposes.

Buy modern paintings

Who is looking for modern paintings for buying, usually means avant-garde paintings from the 20th century, which includes abstract paintings. However, the term modern art, which many do not know, has been used since the end of the 18th century. Experts rather speak of modern art for the period since about 1870 as opposed to contemporary art. However, there is some dispute as to whether contemporary art, or parts of it, should not rather be referred to as postmodern. Modern art does not include, for example, Renaissance, Classicist, and Classicist paintings.

Modern art and therefore modern paintings include the following styles:

  • Romanticism
  • Impressionism
  • Art Nouveau
  • Expressionism (including Tachism)
  • Neo-Expressionism (including New Objectivity)
  • Vedute
  • Realism
  • Dadaism
  • Abstract art
  • Bauhaus
  • Pop art
  • Minimal art
  • Concrete art
  • The New Wild
  • Happening
  • Fluxus
  • Land art
  • Socail art
  • Street Art (z.B. Banksy)

Buy Veduta paintings

Veduta painting is a genre of painting that focusses on realistic depictions of landscapes or cityscapes. The term veduta comes from the Italian word “veduta”, which translates as “view”. The painting of vedute originated in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice, Italy. The veduta paintings were made as souvenirs for foreign travellers, especially for English aristocrats. The success of these vedute had a great influence on large parts of Europe, including Switzerland. Veduta painting introduced a focus on the depiction of landscapes. But there are also animal portraits, such as dog portraits, which are set in the landscape, but the landscape itself only forms the background and the animal portrayed is the focus.

One of the first forerunners among the veduta painters was the Lombard Viviano Codazzi (1603-1670), whose speciality was architectural painting. The Italian Luca Carlevarijs (1663-1730) and the Dutchman Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736), who lived in Rome, were also pioneers of veduta painting. They paved the way for other artists such as Bernard Bellotto, Canaletto and Francesco Guardi.

Basically, veduta painting belongs to the genre of landscape painting. It is true that the depiction of nature was already practised in antiquity. However, it was not until the 16th century that the real depiction of nature acquired an independent significance, particularly in Flemish and German art. Prior to this, the depiction of nature in paintings and murals had more of a decorative or symbolic function; moreover, the nature depicted was more a product of the painter’s imagination and therefore often did not aim to depict a real place.

Paintings of the veduta genre are characterised by their richness of detail and realism. To achieve these qualities, the artists of the time used the so-called “camera obscura”. This made it possible to trace the contours directly, allowing perfect perspectives and proportions to be depicted. Figures of people and animals played a rather subordinate role in veduta painting.

Here you can find veduta painting pictures:

Buy Realism paintings

The artistic style of realism had its heyday between 1840 and 1900. Realism is about representing reality as one actually finds it, i.e. depicting visible reality. Realism distinguishes itself in particular from Romanticism, which had its main phase from 1790 to 1850. This is because Romanticism, in contrast to Realism, was about escaping reality, longing for a wonderful place and the mysterious.

Here you will find paintings in the style of realism:

Buy Naturalism paintings

The difference between Naturalism and Realism is not easy to grasp, as both art movements are closely connected. Naturalism, which had its peak phase between 1870 and 1890, virtually builds on realism, i.e. on the technique of depicting motifs as realistically as possible. However, naturalism often assumes in its depictions that man is determined by his social environment and nature, i.e. that he himself has no control over his fate. In this respect, the how of depiction is given a higher priority than in realism.

Buy Paysage intime paintings

Paysage intime is a style whose representatives specialised in the production of simple and plain landscape paintings (definition of Paysage intime), including members of the Barbizon School, a group of artists from France. Strictly speaking, the Barbizon School was not so much a school as a colony of painters founded by the French landscape painter Théodore Rousseau in the village of Barbizon near Paris. The term Paysage intime comes from the French and translates as “familiar landscape”.

Free of historical and religious motifs, the paintings of the Paysage intime focussed on uncomplicated details of nature from an artist’s perspective. The Paysage intime began in the middle of the 19th century and is considered the predecessor of Impressionism, its foundation stone, so to speak. Théodore Rousseau was the founder of the Paysage intime style. In Germany, the painters Paul Weber and Philipp Röth were representatives of this art movement. In Switzerland, Barthélemy Menn was an important representative of Paysage intime.

Buy Parallelism paintings (Hodler-Stil)

Parallelism is a style developed by the Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler in the second half of the 19th century, and is therefore also called Hodler style or Hodler style. Parallelism is about the insight that many structures in nature and in humans occur in parallel, such as trees, but also mountains or clouds, as well as reflections in a lake.[2] In paintings of parallelism or the Hodler style, reflections, repetitions or other symmetries are therefore particularly frequent. Another characteristic of Hodler’s style is the sharp and strong contours, creating precise outlines of mountains, for example. His style further moves between realism, symbolism and expressionism.[3]

Here you can find paintings in the Hodler style of parallelism:

Buy Abstract Art paintings

Abstract art includes works of art that are detached from the depicted object or nature. This goes so far that one no longer recognizes the actual object or nature. A subform of abstract art is concrete art.

Buy Concrete Art paintings

The term “concrete art” was originally coined by the Dutch painter Theo van Doesburg in 1924. In a manifesto from 1930 by the artists’ group Art Concret, of which van Doesburg was one of the founding members, the programme was laid down according to which concrete art should ideally be based on mathematical-geometric principles. Concrete art is therefore not to be understood as a sub-form of abstract art, since it does not abstract from something that exists in the material world. Rather, concrete works of art are usually created through geometric construction. Therefore, one can also speak of constructive art, as did the Swiss painter and graphic artist Richard Paul Lohse, himself a concrete or constructive artist.

Concrete art is sometimes distinguished from Russian constructivism in that the latter had political connotations, while concrete art is primarily based on science. However, the main representatives of concrete art, such as Richard Paul Lohse, also had social goals in that they wanted to visually uncover structures and systems through concrete art in the hope of reforming them.

Buy Pop Art paintings

Pop Art is an art movement that originated in the 1950s. Pop Art pictures are characterised by the fact that their contours are intensified, the two-dimensional painting style and the predominant use of primary colours. Comic drawings and caricatures also belong to Pop Art. The abbreviation Pop Art stands for the English term “popular art”, which can be translated as broad art, mass art or art of popular culture. Everyday objects or even motifs from advertising and the mass media are often used as motifs in Pop Art.

Well-known representatives of the Pop Art style are Andy Warhol (especially his silk-screen prints) and Roy Lichtenstein (comic pictures).

Buy oil paintings

Oil painting was once considered the supreme discipline of painting. For oil painting, color pigments are mixed with oil to form an oil paint. After the paint has been applied, the oil dries on canvas, a wooden panel or cardboard, for example. In addition, there may be other additives in the oil paint, such as metallic siccatives and resins.

Buy Art Phototgraphy (Photography Art)

Modern art also includes art photography – sometimes called photo art or artistic photography. A representative of photographic art in Switzerland is, for example, the landscape photographer Albert Steiner, who is also included in art collections such as the extensive Collection Pictet, which consists primarily of many paintings by Swiss artists. Albert Steiner’s photographic art is in black and white, as he was mainly active in the first half of the 20th century. Art photography can also be bought, although real photos are usually much more expensive than prints of these photos in magazines or as art prints, for example.

It is difficult to find a general definition of art photography: some people simply count as art photography what is exhibited in art galleries. Others locate art photography historically in England around 1860, when photographers conceived their photos like paintings or other fine art (conceptual photography), for example by blurring the image or setting up painterly backdrops. Still others count as photographic art what expresses a certain theme in terms of content or what takes certain formalities into account.

Art photography is subdivided into various sub-areas, including:

  • conceptual photography
  • experimental photography
  • surreal photography
  • impressionistic photography

However, art photography does not only include parts of landscape photography, but photographic art can also be found in other photo genres, such as portrait photography, architectural photography or nature photography, to name just a few.

In our online gallery you will also find art photographs or prints of such photographs:
