Tessa KIDICK

Tessa Kidick – also known as Tess Kidick – is one of Canada’s premier studio ceramicists, so her works are part of the top studio pottery in Canada.

Short biography of Tessa (Tess) Kidick

1915
born in Hull, Quebec, Canada

1945
studies commercial art for one year at the Ontario College of Art & Design (formerly: Ontario School of Art) [1]

from about 1946
again engages in pottery [1]

1955 – 1992
operates pottery “Emporium of Pottery” in Farr Cottage, Jordan (Niagara Region) [2]

1960s
Teaches pottery at various colleges such as Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology [1]

1962
teaches pottery at Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve; Kidick was commissioned by the Ontario Arts Council to teach several Six Nations women to make pottery in order to revive the lost Iroquois pottery art. Subsequently, Elda “Bun” Smith, who had previously taken an interest in the vanished Iroquoian pottery art and collected old scattered Iroquoian pottery sherds, Oliver Smith, Darlene Smith, Sylvia Smith, Dee Martin, and Karen Williams were active in the “Mohawk Pottery Studio.” After its dissolution in the 1970s, Elda and Oliver Smith founded “Talking Earth Pottery on Six Nations.” [3]
