The painter Ferdinand Sommer is one of the most important and best-known Thun veduta painters of the 19th century. Ferdinand Hodler was apprenticed to F. Sommer in order to train in veduta painting.

born in Coburg, Germany

– first lessons with Friedrich Rauscher the Young, Coburg

– lessons with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Karlsruhe

1855
settles in Thun, where he exhibits his paintings in the same year

around 1870
Ferdinand Sommer teaches Ferdinand Hodler how to paint vedute

1878
move to Lucerne

1881
exhibition of his paintings in Zurich

1901
died in Lucerne, Switzerland
