Style of Ernst Morgenthaler

Ernst Morgenthaler’s style has something of naive art, sometimes something imaginative and poetic, whereby E. Morgenthaler often painted sketches in his oil paintings, mixing drawing and painting.

By the end of the 1920s, his style had developed to the point where figurative elements were only hinted at and certain areas of the picture were depicted almost abstractly[2].

The special feature of E. Morgenthaler’s style was seen in the emergence of the subjective experience and the differentiated colourfulness of his paintings. In contrast to the pathos and monumentality of Ferdinand Hodler, Morgenthaler’s style has something romantic about it[2].
