Detail:
This Thun majolica plate was likely painted with an oil painting on the reverse side in Germany. The previous owner is from the Black Forest. The image on the reverse depicts a woman wearing a Mühlenbach traditional costume and a gold bonnet with a delicate tulle veil from the Black Forest (Germany, Baden-Württemberg). Only married women are permitted to wear the gold bonnet. The design was based on a beautiful oil painting by the German artist Wilhelm Hasemann (*1850, †1913), featuring an almost identical portrait of a woman in Mühlenbach traditional dress, viewed in profile.
