Hedwig SCHERRER
The painter, illustrator and costume designer Hedwig Scherrer was one of the first trained artists in Eastern Switzerland to make art her profession.

Exhibitions by Hedwig Scherrer
Hedwig Scherrer never showed her artworks in an art exhibition during her lifetime, as she deliberately avoided the art world, which she disliked.
After Hedwig Scherrer’s death, a first exhibition of her works was held as a memorial exhibition at the St. Gallen Art Museum in 1941.
Further exhibitions followed, including:
- 1989: “Embroidery time, art and culture in St. Gallen 1870-1930” at the St. Gallen Art Museum
- 2008: “100 years of the studio house in Montlingen” by the Municipal Museum Oberriet SG and the Migros Club School St. Gallen
- 2010-2012: “Hedwig Scherrer – Striving for the Gesamtkunstwerk” at the Historisches Museum St. Gallen
- 2020/2021: “Career aspiration painter! Eleven pioneers of Swiss art” at the Historical and Ethnographic Museum St. Gallen (now the Kulturmuseum St. Gallen)

From 1906 to 1908, Hedwig Scherrer had a studio house built on the Montlinger Bergli, which is called “Villa Scherrer” or “Hedwig Scherrer House”.
