Leonhard STEINER (* 1836, † 1920)
(Leonhard Steiner-Cramer)
Leonhard Steiner was a well-known painter from Zurich who learnt painting – especially landscape painting – as an autodidact. He achieved international success with his painting.
In addition to painting, Leonhard Steiner, who actually came from a wealthy silk industrialist family and also took over his father’s business for a time, was also known as a poet and was regarded as a Zurich local poet.

Short biography
Leonhard Steiner was born in Zurich in 1836, where he died in 1920.
Leonhard Steiner originally came from a wealthy family of silk industrialists. Initially, Leonhard Steiner was forced to take over his father’s business in the silk industry. However, this business, based in Milan, had to be given up around 1880 due to heavy losses.
Leonhard Steiner taught himself painting, in particular landscape painting (high mountain landscapes and nature pieces).
In addition to painting, Leonhard Steiner wrote poems and plays.
By the age of 48, around 1884, Leonhard Steiner was earning his entire living for his family of 10 as a painter and poet.
Leonhard Steiner was also president of the Zurich Stock Exchange Association, president of the Zurich Commercial Society and a member of the board of the Swiss Trade and Industry Association (SHV).

Autobiography of Leonhard Steiner
“Leonhard Steiner
as a painter.
Autobiographical sketch.
I was born on 9 November 1836 and turned to the profession
of a landscape painter around 1884,i.e. at the age of 48,
after adverse circumstances had led me to
renounce my previous commercial activity.
I am self-taught as a watercolourist and landscape painter, but in
my youth I received solid instruction in portrait drawing
from J. J. Schweizer, the teacher of Rudolf Koller.
Proof of this is a chalk portrait of a boy drawn in 1832,
which is on display in the showcase.
I have made and continue to make my studies every year in
various mountainous regions of Switzerland; I have also worked
repeatedly in Tyrol and on the Mediterranean (Riviera, Capri, Sicily).
My paintings, of which I sold a good number, can be found,
apart from in Zurich and other Swiss cities, mainly in Germany,
where, among others, a distinguished gentleman, owner of a renowned
art collection, acquired over 70 sheets of my watercolours. As my most
distinguished buyer I mention King Karl of Romania, who honoured
an exhibition I organised in Ragaz in 1903 with repeated visits and
several purchases.
In recent times, I have been victimised by the ‘modernists’ as suranneé.
I leave it to the visitors to my exhibition to decide whether an art is
outdated that wants nothing more than to come ever closer to
nature and to reproduce its most sublime and its most intimate
beauties as faithfully as possible.”
