The Ceramics Museum Westerwald shows ceramics by the ceramist Gertraud Möhwald, who studied sculpture and ceramics in the former GDR. In addition to creating works of art in her own workshop, she taught at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy in Halle.

Gertraud Möhwald known for ceramic sculptures

Gertraud Möhwald (* 1929, † 2002) is known above all for her figurative sculptures made of ceramics. Möhwald’s style is characterised by the fact that she assembles her sculptures from different materials. In mosaic technique, it is not uncommon to find various already glazed ceramic shards on her heads. Here the influence of the architect Antoni Gaudí (* 1852, † 1926), in whom Möhwald took a strong interest around 1978, becomes clear. Gaudí is best known for his art nouveau buildings in Barcelona, but also for his mosaic figures in Park Güell above Barcelona.

Tragic traffic accident

On 20 December 2002, Gertraud Möhwald had a fatal accident when she was hit by a truck in the city of Halle after getting off a tram. Her source of inspiration Gaudí also died because of a traffic accident after Gaudí was hit by a tram in Barcelona.
